How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step

Are you the DIY type? If so, then changing the oil in your 2019 Dodge RAM 1500 is something you can do yourself with a few simple tools and some guidance. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step by step so that you can do it yourself without any trouble. Let’s get started!

Step 1.

Put the car on a jack and get it high enough that you can easily access the drain plug underneath it. Ensure you don’t go under an area that might get damaged by the weight of the car.

Step 2.

Place your catch pan underneath the drain plug and use some sort of wrench or ratchet to remove it. Some oil pans may not include a drain plug, but instead might include a plug on top of the oil filter (near it).

Step 3.

The liquid should start draining out immediately. After you’ve drained it all out, replace the drain plug and tighten it with your wrench or ratchet.

Step 4.

The oil filter should be located near the oil pan. In order to remove it, you’ll need a wrench or ratchet along with an oil filter tool. The drain plug is on top of the filter and unscrews much like a bolt would. Be sure not to try and turn the entire thing as the part around it will come loose, exposing you to a mess of oil. Allowing too much time for the oil from the filter might cause it to become dry, which can lead to problems when reinstalling it. If that happens you’ll have to clean any excess oil before putting it back in.

Step 5.

Once it’s out, replace the oil filter cap and tighten with your wrench or ratchet. Clean any excess oil from the drain plug area and you’re all set! It’s a good idea to check your records when you change your oil so that you always have an accurate mental note of how much life is left in each car part before it expires.
