If you are someone who prefers to change their own oil, rather than take it in to a shop, you may be wondering how often should I get my oil changed. As with other vehicles on the road today, the 2017 Subaru Forester has an oil change interval of 7,500 miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first. Now that’s not too bad, and we accept that 7,500 miles is a solid mile range for some drivers.
For those who drive less than 10,000 miles per year but still want routine engine maintenance versus waiting until the engine is clearly on its last legs and not performing as it should be or has totally expired, this article may help you out!

Step 1 – Gather all necessary tools together
Tools that will be needed for this job are:
- Oil catch pan or container;
- Socket wrench with various sockets 7, 8 , 10, 13, 17 mm ;
- An oil filter wrench – you can choose from two types of fitters. There are quick-release type and O ring type which is more common . You can find both of them on Amazon. Get new engine oil – if possible try to use genuine manufacturer’s brand.
Step 2 – Prepare your car
Before you start draining oil, make sure your car is parked on a flat surface in order to prevent any unnecessary spills . Please note that when changing the engine oil in Forester 2017, it has to be raised using vehicle ramps or jack stands. Turn off ignition and disconnect battery cable in order to avoid short circuits after draining the old oil. Now it’s time to unscrew drain plug. If the oil has started draining out, then move under your car and collect all remaining drops with catch pan. You should also check other drain plugs for tightness every few thousand miles just to stay safe.
Step 3 – Unscrew drain plug
Remove the plug using 17mm socket wrench and then use your finger to check that the oil has stopped draining. You can also locate oil filter if you haven’t done it already.
Step 4 – Replace the oil filter
Once all of the old oil has finished dripping, unscrew oil filter by hand . Make sure to remove all traces of dirt before proceeding further. If there are any problems with O rings , replace them as well . Once everything is cleaned up, apply some new gasket sealant on metal part of your new engine oil. Then install this unit on its place and hand tighten it.
Step 5 – Add new engine oil
Finally, you can pour up the new engine oil to its place and thread the drain plug back. Remember to use a funnel instead of pouring it directly from the bottle which will prevent any mess.
Now just close the hood and put every tool where it belongs. Start up your car, check if there are any leaks or abnormal noises coming from under your hood and then take her for a ride.
